In the 21st century, humans and superintelligent computers battle for survival. Attempting to stop the machines' solar power, humans used nuclear weaponry to block out the sun. In retaliation, the machines began using humans for fuel. In order to keep the humans' minds occupied, thus keeping them alive, the machines constructed an virtual reality world similar to the end of the 20th century. The few humans in the 21st century who know about this refer to the virutal world as The Matrix.
The One, the hero prophecied by The Oracle to save all the humans, can see the Matrix for what it truly is, which appears to be green computer code against a black (void) background.
